MANILA, NOVEMBER 20, 2020 - Over the course of two weeks, two devastating back to back typhoons hit the Philippines. On November 1st, Super Typhoon Rolly (Goni) the strongest typhoon ever recorded in recent history struck the southern region of the Philippines. An estimated two million Filipinos have been affected, many of whom lost their homes and livelihoods. Ten days later, Typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) swept through many of the same provinces previously devastated by Typhoon Rolly, including Metro Manila and parts of Central Luzon leaving widespread flooding and power outages. 

Many areas are still struggling to recover from the aftermath of these calamities. Homes and livelihood across various provinces were lost to floods, strong winds and rain. LGUs and other organizations continue to mobilize and provide assistance to all who were affected by these typhoons, but many are still in desperate need of help. 

In line with its mission to inspire creativity and bring joy, TikTok has pledged to donate US$300,000 (approximately Php15M) to support typhoon relief and rehabilitation efforts. US$150,000 has been allocated to the Philippine Red Cross for their onground mobilization efforts providing hot meals and other urgent necessities in affected communities.  

“The Philippine Red Cross is always committed to reaching out to the helpless and to the most vulnerable. TikTok’s donation will surely go a long way in further strengthening PRC’s humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of those who were impacted by the recent calamities. You can be sure the Red Cross will continue to be there for the people affected,” said Senator Richard Gordon, Chairman of the Philippine Red Cross. 

On Saturday, November 28 at 7:00pm, TikTok will also host the #TikTokTogetherPH virtual live fundraising concert featuring The Itchyworms, Mayonnaise, Kyline Alcantara, Rico Blanco, and Ella Cruz among other guest artists and local creators, joining one another on the app to help Filipinos in need. Proceeds from the virtual event will be turned over to partner organizations, with TikTok supplementing funds raised up to US$150,000. 

“We stand with all Filipinos during their time of need and we want to do what we can to help all those affected get back on their feet. TikTok has been the go-to platform for happy and inspiring moments, now we are extending this mission even beyond the app,” TikTok said.  

As it spreads joy and inspiration to millions of people on the platform each day, TikTok is also committed to doing their part in helping the broader community, through these efforts and through organizations like the Philippine Red Cross.

I can no longer remember when I was diagnosed with diabetes –it’s been that long. And if you’d ask, Yes, I wasn’t monitoring my glucose levels back then. I would only visit my doctor whenever I would be available. My mom also has diabetes and she would prick my finger to check my glucose and push me to go see the doctor together with her. After getting the list for my meds, I buy them, take them religiously and that's it. I am such a lazy lady and stubborn. And as they say, there will come a time when you'll reach a certain age when you will finally want to be physically active, eat and be healthy. It was June 2019 when my husband and I made a decision to enroll in a fitness club so we can live more actively and healthier and be able to cope with our little boy's growing up needs. Everything was going well, our weight started to drop slowly, we still ate what we wanted but in moderation. In short, we were changing our lifestyle and  I was also improving on my dancing skills J We went to visit mom and she would still randomly prick me to check my glucose and she was so happy that I was on track.



2020 came and until now we are still in a pandemic situation, we can't visit mom and she can't visit us too. The fitness club needed to close, and we are just doing some physical activities at home but sometimes we feel too lazy to move because we are working during the night shift. And because we are at home, food is life! We actually have a weighing scale to check that we don’t go back to our previous weights before this fitness journey. Everything was good but I wasn’t sure about my glucose levels – I just took medicine. 


With all these happening, I was able to try a product from Abbott making diabetes management easier. Abbott was very generous in terms of educating me about the product through an onboarding session for them to explain what the new product is all about. 

The new product I am referring to is the FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system. I am sharing with you the benefits and things we need to know about FreeStyle Libre. 




The Experience:

When the sensor was finally attached to the back of my upper arm, I was a bit cautious that it might fall. Every time I move, I had to check the sensor from time to time. It is true, it stays even when taking a bath so unless it is removed with force, the sensor will stay on your arm. (Here's a tip, wash the area of your arm first with plain soap and let it dry before attaching the sensor.)

 






Reading my glucose levels was a lot easier and fun! Even my little boy knows how to operate the reader and pretends to be my doctor, checking my reading every time I wake up. It gave me more inspiration too to watch out my eating habits, made me decide to move whenever my readings started to spike, and it made me conscious of my whole daily routine. It was so convenient that after like a few days, it already became normal for me to check my glucose reading anytime, anywhere. 








After 14 days, it was time to remove the sensor. The reader, was a small touchscreen device but stored a lot of information such as:

-Graphs of my glucose readings 
-My average glucose reading and whenever I am within, below or above my target glucose range 

-How many days I have been using the sensor

And after my 14 days, all I need to do is purchase a new sensor and use the same reader to continue tracking my results. But the best part is, all these information can also be seen online through LibreView. All you have to do is sign up for free, download and follow the installation prompts. Make sure you have the reader and cable with you because you would need to connect it to be able to get all the information. Just follow the on-screen instructions to upload your data. 



After the transfer, watch all your information unfold and this was truly magical for me! I saw my 14-day results on a daily or weekly basis. It had graphs and very detailed information of my glucose readings and I was totally amazed. The best part is I could share the information with my doctor remotely for him to assess if my medicines were doing me good. This was very helpful especially during this time of pandemic. I was afraid to go out and have myself checked in clinics or hospitals because I don't want to be exposed. So, having the FreeStyle Libre was the best solution I had, and it is available online through Lazada and in selected Mercury Drugstore branches. For those who think it is pricey, yes it can be but for me, it was worth it after all the information and the times I got to scan which made me worry less if I was on track. As the COVID-19 pandemic has crippled businesses across industries, this Filipino brand has found a silver lining—pushing through with an expansion plan despite challenging times.


Prime Global Corporation (PGC) is taking on the “new normal” with optimism as it leverages Filipinos’ rekindled love for home-cooking and the rise of the home-based food delivery business amid dine-out and movement restrictions to boost sales of its Barrio Fiesta products.

Adjusting to a changed food business landscape, Barrio Fiesta has recalibrated its sales approach, upping its online presence as it continues to diversify its product portfolio, from its top-selling shrimp paste to new sauces, spreads, dry mixes and snacks.


“Fortunately for the packaged food category, we are seeing growth opportunities still as people continue to remain at home, opting for home-cooked meals and seeing the rise of ‘home chefs.’ We anticipate that the ‘new normal’ will continue to bring about more interest, creativity and enthusiasm for lutong-bahay recipes, and we want to be there for them,” said Reychelle Ann Gigante, PGC Marketing Head.


Through its social media pages, Barrio Fiesta is providing Filipino cooks lutong-bahay recipes and tips, noting the many that are still locked down at home are shifting their budgets to home-cooked meals while small entrepreneurs have gone into the online food business in place of lost livelihood.


This is where PGC saw an opportunity to help while selling its products in the safest possible way: no on-site promotional events and mostly a virtual interface with its target market.



“All on-ground activities have been cancelled, current digital content efforts have been geared towards engaging our online audience with useful recipes and tips using our products, and recently we opened our Facebook page to online bulk orders for those who would be interested to resell Barrio Fiesta products within their community,” Gigante said.


PGC has also shifted to digital marketing, seeing greater spending on online promotional ventures as the pandemic continues.


At the same time, it maintains presence in physical stores—its primary trade channel—to cater to Filipinos who still opt to shop outside. Barrio Fiesta products are available in supermarkets, groceries, convenience stores, drug stores and sari-sari-stores.


While we very much acknowledge the important role that e-commerce has played during the new normal, we also understand that there is still a great need for general and modern trade or supermarkets and groceries and it is very much essential for us as well as it still caters to Filipinos who opt to shop in brick-and-mortar stores. For us, it won’t be one or the other, as this multi-channel availability will allow us to reach our customers in the most convenient way possible,” Gigante said.

PGC counts on the Filipinos’ familiarity with its heritage products to remain as the go-to brand for staple condiments even amid the rise of artisanal, home-made brands, given the scope of its production and distribution reach.

 

“We are aware that there are small online entrepreneurs selling specialty or artisanal bagoong and condiments, and this just goes to show how huge and dynamic the food market is,” Gigante said. “As for specialty condiments, at the moment, Barrio Fiesta is the only brand able to produce and distribute its products at scale commercially, across local and international markets, while maintaining high quality and authentic taste, made possible with a strong business model.”


Barrio Fiesta commands a 65-percent market share of the local sautéed shrimp paste category and 95 percent of the international market 2019.


“Our goal this year is to further dominate the category in both domestic and international markets. And in the next three years, we aspire to be among the top local companies in the sauces, dressings, condiments and package foods categories,” said Vincent Ace Villa-Real, President and Chief Operating Officer of PGC.


“The Barrio Fiesta retail brand is one of the few remaining Filipino heritage brands whose equity can cut across the broad spectrum of the culinary and food industries. We intend to make the most of the equity. We can’t be a single product company; category expansion whether organic or thru external synergies is a given,” Villa-Real said.


The manufacturing business of Barrio Fiesta sautéed shrimp paste was acquired by the Ang-Hortaleza Corporation through a subsidiary in 2011. The brand is now under Prime Global Corporation, a manufacturing, marketing and distribution subsidiary company owned by the Hortaleza Corporation holding company.


Earlier this year, it released its own version of everyday condiments and snacks: the Barrio Fiesta Gourmet Series Patis (fish sauce), Barrio Fiesta Tubasuk (spiced sugar cane vinegar), Barrio Fiesta Crispy Joy Breading Mix, Barrio Fiesta Peanut Butter Spreads, Barrio Fiesta Chicken and Beef Broth Cubes, and Barrio Fiesta Jumbo Roasted Peanuts.
